Vessels For Transporting Liquids

Stamni (pitcher). Made in Kendri, this is the characteristic type found in eastern Crete. Capacity 15 litres.

Laini (jug). Used for transporting and storing water. Capacity ± 8 litres. Small, shorter and elongated shapes from the same area.

Laina (jug). A miniature form of the stamni of eastern Crete.

Stamni (pitcher). Characteristic form made by the potters of Thrapsano, with a thick lip at the end of the neck. Decoration on the upper body with repeated semi-circular incisions or serrated band.

Stamni (pitcher). Type produced by the Margarites potters, with a simple spout narrowing towards the end of the neck. Coloured slip decoration.

Laina (jug). Vessel from Nohia in Chania Prefecture. It is also called a mesomistato and gomarolaina, with a capacity of 816 and 24 litres respectively. The upper half of the round body is decorated with thin parallel incisions. It resembles ancient amphoras.

Stamna (pitcher). Found in the Selino district of Chania Prefecture, it differs from other vessels of the same type due to its flat base. There is a wide incised band of decoration running round the middle of the body.
