Washing Vessels

Loustra (washbasin). A large basin with a place for the soap. Used for washing and clothes-washing.

Alousidiastra or bougadovraska (washtub). Used for two purposes: rinsing clothes in hot water and ash (to disinfect and clean them) and for washing raw raisins in a potash solution before drying them out over several days, to deter insects.

Vrysi (basin) from Thrapsano. A basin with a place for the soap, a lid and a hole for the tap. Capacity about 10 litres.

Vrysi (basin) from Margarites. A large “half” flask with a hole for the tap.

Briki. A pitcher used by women for washing their hair, mainly made in Margarites. Decorated with slip.

Boutantza. Also called a kounenos, kounenidi, bougadokounenos or mastrapas. Used for transferring hot water from one vessel to another. A medieval form of the above, dated to the 12th century.

WEAVING VESSEL

Kioupi. A large cylindrical dyeing vessel, often over two metres tall. Used for dyeing thread or cloth in hot water and dye. The contents were stirred for some time with a long rod or stick.
